Save, update, and save as new

The difference between updating a project in place and duplicating it for variants.

When to use this

Read before your first "Save as New" — the most common save confusion for new users.

Update Project

Writes changes to the same project ID. This is your normal save. Dashboard shows one project with latest updated time.

Use Update when iterating on the same show, same rack case, or same wall rental.

Save as New

  • Creates a copy with a new ID — original project unchanged.
  • Prompts for a new name — use for alternate configs ("Same rack — corporate layout").
  • Diagram, rack, and wall builders all support save-as-new style duplication from the save dropdown where available.

Duplicate from dashboard

You can also duplicate entire projects from the project list — fast way to clone last year's show as a starting point.

Duplicating locked or view-only diagrams may require Pro — see Free plan limits.

Common mistakes

  • Save as New when you meant Update — now two projects diverge and crew has wrong link.
  • Never saving — relying on browser session only.
